John Maag, Ph.D.
Dr. John Maag is co-founder and president of ACT as well as being a Professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln specializing in the education and treatment of children with emotional and behavioral disorders. He teaches courses on cognitive-behavior therapy, behavior management, and counseling children at-risk. Dr. Maag received a Distinguished Teaching Award in 1993. His current interests include functional assessment, treatment of depression and attention deficit disorder, and training individuals in the use of self-management skills. He has published over 60 articles and book chapters on these topics and others addressing the education and treatment of children and adolescents. His research is widely cited in special education textbooks including those dealing with inclusion, emotional and behavioral disorders, learning disabilities, and behavior management. He is the author of Parenting without Punishment which won a Parent's Choice Award. A licensed psychotherapist in part-time private practice, he also is a nationally recognized behavioral consultant on best practices for managing resistance and improving relationships at work and home. He is a consulting editor and field reviewer for numerous journals as well as co-editor of special issues of journals on attention deficit disorder and cognitive therapy.
